Lester F. Haas

The funeral for Lester Francis Haas, 91, of Tucson, Ariz., will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Emanuel Lutheran Church with the Rev. Mark Kukkonen and the Rev. Eugene Mitchell co-officiating.

Mr. Haas died Feb. 19 in Tucson.

He was born Oct. 18, 1911, in Van Horne to the Rev. Franz I. and Tusanelda (Eichenberger) Haas. He was a 1929 graduate of Abraham Lincoln High School. During high school he began working at the former Council Bluffs Savings Bank as a messenger. He retired as vice president in 1978 after 49 years service at that bank. He was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church where he served on various boards and committees, including chairmanship of the building committee. He was involved in various civic organizations. He was a Boy Scout leader in the 1940s and was a life member of the Kiwanis Club. He served on the Council Bluffs Water Board and also served for eight years on the Council Bluffs School Board where he was president for part of that time. His interests included golfing, fishing and traveling.

Mr. Haas was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth (Anderson), on Dec. 21, 1997. They were married 63 1/2 years. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Melvin and Gerald Haas; and a sister, Naomi Grote.

Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Eileen and Rev. Eugene Mitchell, of Windsor, Conn., and Kathleen and Donald Malick of Oro Valley, Ariz.; four grandchildren and their spouses, Randall and Jill Malick of Oro Valley, Mark and Lori Malick of Salina, Kan., David and Debra Mitchell of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, Sarah and Karl Hatlemark of Bath, Me.; two great-grandchildren, Brandon and Jordan Lalick of Salina.

Visitation will be Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Cemetery, followed by a luncheon at the church.

Memorials may be offered to Emanuel Lutheran Church.
