Jeri Jennings Hughes

The funeral for Jeri Jennings Hughes, 83, of Lake Okoboji will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Council Bluffs with the Rev. Martha Rogers of St. Alban's Episcopal Church officiating.

Mrs. Hughes died Feb. 15 at Lake Regional Health Hospital in Spirit Lake.

She was born Oct. 12, 1919, in Council Bluffs to Henry Droge and Marjorie (Darnell) Droge. She graduated in 1938 from Abraham Lincoln High School. She was secretary for Council Bluffs Public Schools for 20 years and helped to organize the Council Bluffs Secretarial Association. She was the organization's first president. She and her husband, William R. Hughes Sr., were active members of St. Paul Episcopal Church in Council Bluffs until moving permanently to Lake Okoboji upon their retirement in 1982. She was a member of the Lakes Lakeview Club and the Lakes Bible Study Group and a member of St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Spirit Lake.

Mrs. Hughes was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Dean Jennings, in 1966 and her second husband, William R. Hughes Sr., on July 7, 2002.

Surviving children and their families are Bruce Jennings and his children, Jennifer and Dean, of Belmont, Mich., Deanna Jennings and her children, Eric Hausig of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Brian and his wife, Coreen, of Grand Haven, Mich., Rebecca and her husband, Stanley Matli, of Madera, Calif., Marjorie and her husband, John Ilich of Sedona, Ariz, and their children, Susan Ilich Jones, Mark Ilich and Lynne Beehr of Aspen, Colo.; stepson, William R. Hughes Jr., and wife, Judy, of Council Bluffs and their children, Alicia Hughes of Rochester, Minn., and Trey Hughes of Council Bluffs; many nieces and nephews.

Visitation with the family will be Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery followed by a reception at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Council Bluffs. A memorial service will be held for Bill and Jeri at St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Spirit Lake some time in the spring.

Memorials may be offered to Bill and Jeri Hughes Scholarship Fund for the Spirit Lake and Okoboji High Schools, c/o St. Alban's Church, Spirit Lake.
