1871 - HARRIET ELIZABETH CARSE - 1970

Mrs. Harriet Carse dies at 98;was Oakland's oldest resident Funeral services for Mrs. Harriet Carse, 98, were held Monday, March 23 at Vieth Funeral Home. Oakland's oldest citizen, she died March 20 at Colonial Manors Nursing Home, three weeks be-
fore her 99th birthday. Harriet E. Atkinson was born April 12, 1871 in Fremont County near Sidney. In 1876 she and her parents, along with five brothers and two sisters, came by covered wagon to Oakland (then Big Grove.) She attended rural school here and attended high school at Ida Grove. She studied normal training at Drake University and taught schools in this area. On December 31, 1899, she was married to Robert H. Carse.They lived on a farm west of Oakland where two children
were born, Donald Timothy and Stella Mary. Mr. and Mrs. Carse celebrated their golden wedding in June 1947, six months before her husband's death.
Mrs. Carse was the last survivor of seven founders of the Women's Federated Club in Oakland. She was Belknap Chairman of the Red Cross during World War I and a past county president of the Women's Christian Temperance Union.
A long-time member of Sharon Presbyterian Church, she was one of the first organists and Sunday
School teacher there. She was a charter member of
the new Oakland Historical Society. Survivors include her daughter, Stella Thompson of Oakland; a granddaughter, Natalie Hodgson of San Rafael, Calif.; two great grandchildren, Wells and Elizabebeth Hodgson. The Rev. Marion Floyd officiated at funeral services. Bearers were Claire Vance, Gene Schuster,Donald Wulff, Willard Fritz, Marion Kullborn and Milton Campbell.
Burial was at Belknap Cemetery in Oakland.
