Joseph C. Loyd, age 90, died March 22, 2009, at his home, in Council Bluffs.

He was born September 1, 1918, in Orson, Iowa, to Allen and Alma (Haller) Loyd. He married Helen L. Johnson, in Mondamin, Iowa, on September 3, 1941. They were residents of Council Bluffs since 1946. As an elder at First Christian Church, Joe, with a small group of dedicated Christians, felt the Lord's call to start another congregation. East Side Christian Church was established where he faithfully served as a charter member and Elder. Joe shared his Lord's love of carpentry and fishing. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps, in the South Pacific, for three and a half years. He was also a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers, and was a rural mail carrier for more than 30 years.

He is survived by his wife, Helen L. Loyd; daughter, Marcia Jo (Kenneth) Christensen, of Bloomington, Ill.; son, Grant O. (Phyllis) Loyd, of Buffalo, Mo.; grandchildren, Ryan Christensen, of Alexandria, Va., Bradley Christensen, of Lander, Wyo., Jessamy Loyd (Jeff) Johnson and Stephanie Loyd, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Bethany Loyd, of Omaha, Neb.; brother, Allen Randolph "Shorty" (Jean) Loyd, of Mariposa, Calif.; nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends, Wednesday, 6-8 p.m., at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be held Thursday, 11 a.m., at East Side Christian Church, with Pastor Jon Schank and former East Side minister, Tim Barber, officiating. Following lunch at the church, the procession will depart at 2 p.m., for a graveside service, at Magnolia, Iowa, Cemetery. Memorials may be made to East Side Christian Church.
