In Memory: Fred Geise

Funeral services for Fred A. Geise, 97, of Council Bluffs was held Tuesday, June 20th at 10:30 a.m. at the Underwood Lutheran Church with the Rev. David Bernhardt officiating.

Mr. Geise died June 15, 2000 at Bethany Lutheran Home, Council Bluffs, Iowa.

He was born in Kohlstadt, Germany, June 29, 1902, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Heinrich Geise, and was the oldest of ten children.

On March 12, 1930 he married Hertha R. Ruffner Ebert. They farmed west of Underwood until they retired and moved to Underwood in 1971. In 1993 they moved to Bethany Heights, in Council Bluffs, after Hertha's death in 1999, Fred moved to Bethany Lutheran Home.

Fred was active in the Underwood Lutheran Church and was the last surviving member of the original building committee, serving as building chairman. He was physically active in all phases of building the church.

While living in Underwood, Fred was also active in his community, serving as Hazel Dell Township School Director, a Farm Bureau member and a member of the Senior Citizens.

Survivors include two sons, Frederick A. and wife Lyda Geise of Logan and Richard H. and wife Nancy Geise of Underwood; two daughters, Ruth Ann Tiarks of Treynor and Karen I. and her husband Carroll Olsen of Minden. Daughter in law, Sandy Geise, of Omaha, Nebraska; 24 grandchildren; 39 great grandchildren; two sisters, Louise Geise of Underwood and Irene and her husband Bob Bumann of Schleswig. Besides his wife Hertha, he was preceded in death by infant daughters Betty Marie and Sylvia Clara and by son Kenneth E. Geise who died April 7, 1998.

Memorials may be offered to the Underwood Lutheran Church Building Fund.

Cutler Funeral home was in charge of the arrangements.
