In Memory: Elmo I. Cleaveland
The funeral for Elmo I. Cleaveland, 78, of Council Bluffs was held Wednesday at 10:30 A.M. at Mount Hope United Methodist Church with the Rev. Becky Killion of Faithful Shepherd Presbyterian Church officiating.
Mr. Cleaveland died March 9 at the family farm near Council Bluffs. He was born December 8, 1923, in LaVoy, Wyoming, to Jerome C. and Mabel A. (Rounds) Cleaveland. He previously lived in Nonpareil, Nebraska, moving to Council Bluffs in 1944.
He was a 1941 graduate of Hemingford, Nebraska, High School. He served with the Merchant Marines in the Pacific during World War II.
He owned various businesses in Council Bluffs for more than 25 years, including North Broadway Grocery, HyTyme Restaurant and Lounge and Cleaveland Farm Supply.
He was a member of Amber Lodge No. 569 in Quick, the Grovers Association. He was also a member and treasurer of the Missouri Valley Mariners of the Merchant Marines. He played clarinet in a small musical group.
Mr. Cleaveland and his wife, Virginia (Henry) were married December 31, 1947.
Survivors in addition to his wife include one daughter, Ellen Person, and husband, John, of San Diego; two sons, Dennis and wife, Mary, of Elkhorn, Nebraska, and Barry and wife, Cindy, of Council Bluffs; seven grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Visitation with the family was held with a Masonic service at 7 by Amber Lodge No. 569 AF & AM at Cutler Chapel. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Washington Township, with graveside mariner’s honors.
Memorials may be offered to Mount Hope United Methodist Church or Amber Lodge No. 569.
