Julius Sornsen
(May 4, 1895 - December 14, 1933)
World War I VeteranJulius Sornsen, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Sornsen, was born May 4, 1895, near Walnut, Iowa. In this immediate vicinity he remained the greater portion of his life. He remained with his parents until the outbreak of the World War and then served in France for his country during 1917-18. After his discharge he returned to Walnut and re-engaged in the farming occupation. During the last ten years he has farmed with his brother, Harry, south of Walnut, and during the last eight years near Avoca.
For nearly ten years he has been suffering from intestinal ailments which made themselves more acutely felt during the past year. Requiring surgical treatment, he submitted to an operation early in October and again about ten days ago, hoping to secure relief. However, all of these efforts failed to give him the hoped for relief and he passed away Thursday afternoon, December 14, at about 3 pm.
Julius Sornsen possessed many sterling qualities, which makes his apparently untimely death the more severe. He was industrious and at all times was most conscientious in all his enterprises and endeavors of life. He was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran church at Walnut, a member of the American Legion Post 297, at Avoca, and affiliated with the A.O.U.W. fraternal organization.
Thos who mourn his departure are his widowed mother, his brothers and sisters: Mrs. Henry Kay of Harlan, Mrs. Fred Kuhr, Mrs. Henry Koos, Harry of Avoca, and Wilbert at home; two sisters-in-laws: Mrs. Ella Sornsen and Mrs. Harry Sornsen, both of Avoca; three brothers-in-law: Henry Kay of Harlan, Fred Kurh and Henry Koos, both of Walnut. The father and three brothers have preceded the deceased in death. Hugo in 1910, Will in 1918, Edward in 1925, and the father in May of this year.
Funeral services were held from the home of his mother and from the Evangelical Lutheran church at Walnut, Sunday afternoon at 2 pm. Interment was made in the Walnut cemetery.
