Rosie Rosenwinkel 1896-1926

After a long, lingering illness of many weeks, Miss Rosie Rosenwinkel passed away at the St. Joseph hospital in Omaha, Tuesday, December 14, aged 30 years, 4 months, and 17 days.

The body was brought back to Avoca by Blust Bros, undertakers and taken to the home of her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Schmidt, where the funeral services were held today (Thursday) at 2 o’clock and the remains were taken to her old home at Elmhurst, Illinois, by her parents, and laid to rest in the family lot in the cemetery of that city.

Rosie Rosenwinkel was born July 28, 1896 at Itasca, Illinois the daughter of William and Johanna Rosenwinkel. The family afterwards moved to Elmhurst where Miss Rosie attended the public schools and grew to womanhood. In May 1914, Miss Rosie came to Avoca to visit her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Schmidt, where she has since made her home. For the past few years she has been employed at the Citizens Savings Bank.

Miss Rosie made many friends being possessed of an unusually pleasing personality. To know her was to love her. She spoke only words of kindness and encouragements. Her friends were number by her acquaintances. She lived a beautiful Christian life always ready and willing to help the sick, the needy and the unfortunate. Her associates always spoke of her as the ideal young lady.

Sometime over a year ago Miss Rosie underwent an operation at the Mayo hospital for the removal of a goiter. At that time it was discovered that she was afflicted with that dread disease, cancer. She was given all that medical science could do but the disease could not be stayed. All through the many weeks and months of her illness, she never uttered a word of complaint and seemed cheerful and happy to the last moment and passed away with a smile on her face. Truly of her it may be said, “She has fought the fight, she has kept the faith.”

The world is better that Miss Rosie lived in it, if only for a few short years, strewing the flowers of sincere friendship wherever she passed.

Miss Rosie was a faithful worker in the church, doing her work many times when her poor frail body would hardly stand the strain, and never complained. She was one of the best loved young ladies ever in Avoca. Her pleasing and jolly disposition toward those she met in a business or social way, won the respect and love of all classes. Her death although expected, was a sad blow to this community. The family has the sincerest sympathy of the entire community in their hour of sorrow.
