Funeral services for Herbert Eugene Leach III who died at the home of his parents in Avoca Wednesday morning, July 16, were held from the Blust Berthusen Funeral home last Friday at 2:30 pm with the Rev John M. DeBerg in charge of the services. Burial was in Graceland cemetery.
Herbert E. Leach III, only son of Dr. and Mrs. H.E. Leach, Jr., was born in Avoca on March 27, 1928. At the time of his passing he had reached the age of 19 years, 3 months, and 19 days. In the spring of 1945 he graduated from the Avoca high School with high honors and received the Davis Award. Herbie, as he was known, to his friends and class mates, was an outstanding student and took part in most of the school activities.
In the fall of 1945, he enrolled at the University of Iowa and attended school there for one semester when he was stricken with an illness that prevented him from further study.
Herbert was a member of the Presbyterian church, was faithful and regular in his attendance at Sunday school and was interested in the youth activities of the church.
He was especially interested in athletics and during his high school days he took part in various events.
He leaves to mourn his death, his parents and two sisters; Geraldine and Peggy Ann; many relatives and a host of friends both young and old.
Casket bearers at the last rites were former classmates and friends and included Donald Gross, Charles True, Harry Jensen, Kenneth Eggerss, Harry Rasmussen, Richard Turner, Byron Kaven, and Charles Rutenbeck. Flower girls were Shirley Henderson, Dorothy True, Mary Frances Anderson, and marilyn Kennedy.
