Mrs. S.J.T. Sloan 1893-1930

Sudden death Shock to Avoca

Funeral services for mother and babe held Tuesday with burial at Old Home.

Not often are we called upon to chronicle a death which brought such consternation to the community and caused such heartfelt sympathy for the family as that of Mrs. Sloan, wife of Rev S. J. Tilden Sloan, pastor of the congregational church of Avoca, which occurred Monday morning at the Edmundson hospital in Council Bluffs.

Rev. Sloan left Avoca Friday for Boydston, Illinois where he preached as candidate for the pulpit. The morning following his departure Mrs. Sloan became ill and physicians recommended that she go to the hospital which she did Sunday. There the physicians determined a Caesarean operation was necessary and this was done with the result that her little baby boy was found to be dead. Following the operation she appeared to be in very good condition but later her heart weakened and she passed away at 4:30 am Monday.

All that loving friends could do was done for Mrs. Sloan; however, their efforts to reach Rev. Sloan were fruitless and he knew nothing of the tragedy in his home until he had almost reached there on Monday afternoon when he was met by friends who told him.

Alice Marie Donnelley was born in Kansas, December 20, 1893, and passed to her eternal home at Jennie Edmundson hospital in Council Bluffs Monday morning August 4, (1930) at the age of 36 years, 7 months, and 14 days.

She attended various schools in and near Kansas City, including Normal school. She taught school several years and was an outstanding worker in the church.

She was united in marriage to Rev. S.J. Tilden Sloan, one of her pastors, in July 1921, in Kansas City, Kansas. From this union three children were born, Evelyn Marie, 8, and Margaret Rose, about three, surviving. She also is survived by Mr. Sloan; her mother, Mrs. Dora Kidwell and a half brother, Thomas Kidwell of Williamstown, Kansas; two sisters, Mrs. Rose Irwin and Mrs. Maude Bullock both of Kansas City; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted from the First Congregational Church Tuesday afternoon at 4 o’clock by Rev. C.S. Colburn, pastor of the First Congregational church of Dunlap. Rev. Colburn lived next door to Mrs. Sloan in Kansas City before her marriage and at one time was her pastor.

The body was shipped to Kansas City, where another service was held for Mrs. Sloan and her baby boy interred together, Wednesday afternoon.

Miss Helena Rohlfs accompanied the family to Kansas City to assist in the care of the little ones, having been sent by the church.
