MRS. ETTA GRAUEL ESCHER 1865-after 1930

Mrs. Etta Grauel Escher died Monday, September 8, after a brief illness of influenza and heart trouble at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ed Harris.

Funeral services were held Thursday forenoon and the r remains taken to Harlan and laid to rest in the family lot of the cemetery of that city. Rev Propst of the Presbyterian church of Avoca officiating.

Etta E. Kramar was born on the 7th day of August 1865, at Morley, Iowa. In June 1883, she was united in marriage to Chauncey D. Grauel at Anamosa, Iowa. Several moves were made during the early days of their marriage. For a time they lived at Mechanicsville, Iowa,; then later moved to Harlan, Iowa, where seven children were born to them. They finally settled permanently in Avoca where they lived until the death of Mr. Grauel. On November 6, 1929, Mrs. Grauel was united in marriage to Henry A. Escher at Omaha, Nebraska. From there they went at once to Long Beach, California where they spent the winter with Harold K. Grauel, other relatives and friends. They returned to Iowa May 20, 1930 and soon afterwards Mr. Escher was taken to the hospital and died on the 21st day of July. After the death of Mr. Escher his wife came again to Avoca and made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Frances Harris. There she remained until her death.

She was preceded in death by three children: Bessie E; Roy D.; and Marie L. Grauel.

Surviving her are her daughter, Mrs. Frances Harris of Avoca and three sons: George L. Grauel of Omaha, Nebraska; Harold K. Grauel of Long Beach, California; and Clarence D. Grauel of Avoca.

From the time Mrs. Etta Grauel came to Avoca more than 20 years ago; she took an active part in her husband’s business, she was also very active in church work and ever ready to assist in anything for the good of the community. She was a good wife, ideal mother and a kind neighbor. Her sudden death was a shock to her friends many of whom did not know she was ailing until told of her death. She was ever kind and thoughtful of others and took pleasure in the happiness and success of her friends.
