Alice Jackson passed away at her home Saturday forenoon, October 9, 1926, aged 58 years, 2 months and 2 days. The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the First Congregational church at 2 o’clock. Rev. Fleming officiating.

Mary Alice Jackson was born near Logan, Iowa, August 7, 1868. When one year old her parents moved to a farm east of Avoca where she spent her childhood and girlhood days and grew to womanhood. She taught in the rural schools for several years. In 1903, her parents moved to Avoca where the remainder of her life was spent in caring for her parents, who had retired from farm life. Her mother passed away in November 1919. She continued to care for her father until his death in May 1925.

Since coming to Avoca she spent much of her time in working for the Red Cross of which organization she was local secretary. We can truthfully say no person in Avoca did more and gave more of their time to the interest of the poor and unfortunate. The day was never too cold, the weather too severe, or the night too dark that Alice Jackson was not ready to give aid to those in need and want.

Her church and Sunday school the W.C.T.U. and the Red Cross received her loyal support. At an early age she gave her heart to the Savior and united with the First Congregational church, and remained an earnest, faithful worker until her physical weakness prevented her from continuing the duties that she so loved to do. She had been secretary of the church since 1906.

In her death Avoca has lost a worthy citizen whose place will be hard to fill, the church has lost a true Christian whose many charitable deeds will live in the memory of us all.

She leaves to mourn her departure: three brothers, Will and Charles of Avoca and Edwin of Council Bluffs and sister, Mrs. Lena Carter of Chevelah, Washington, besides numerous other relatives and a host of friends.

Her whole life has been one of service to others. Her first thought was for the welfare of others, never of herself. Surely, it may be said of her, “She hath done what she could.”
