WILLIAM EDWARD SLADE 1852-1928

William Edward Slade passed away Friday morning, January 12, 1928, at the Walker hospital, aged 75 years, 2 months, and 20 days. The funeral services were held Monday at 2 o’clock at the Blust funeral home where the body was taken after his death. Rev. Kilmer of the First Presbyterian church officiating.

Ed Slade was born October 23, 1852, at Clearmont, Ohio, and at the age of twenty-three years he moved to Nichols, Iowa, where he was married to Eliza Hechtner in 1876. In 1881, Mr. and Mrs. Slade moved to Avoca where Mr. Slade conducted a photograph studio which he sold to Brandt Bros., in 1884.

After selling his studio Mr. Slade followed his trade, that of a painter and paper hanger and later engaged in the real estate business, which business he followed until his death. At one time he had a real estate office in the Bluffs as well as Avoca and did a nice business.

He was chief of the Red Jacket fire company for several years and took great pride in his work with the department. He established the Slade Real Estate Company and h ad an office in Council Bluffs for several years. He returned to Avoca about fifteen years ago and continued in the real estate business.

Ed Slade had not been very well the past year, and his recent illness was only a few days in duration. Just before he was taken to his bed he had all his teeth extracted and his physical condition made it hard for him to stand the shock and he gradually grew worse until death relieved him of his suffering.

Ed Slade was well known over this part of Iowa and he enjoyed the confidence of many friends.

The services at the cemetery were under the auspices of the Odd Fellow lodge of Avoca, of which he was a member.

He leaves his wife and two children: Mrs. James Johnson, of Omaha; and Charles Slade, of Des Moines.
