Funeral Services Held for Fred Petersen
(September 15, 1893 - 1947)

Last rites for Fred Petersen, 54, who died at his home her last Thursday evening, were held from the First Lutheran Church Sunday at 2 pm with the Rev Joseph Gerit in charge of the services. Burial was in Graceland cemetery with military honors conducted by members of the Fred Funston American Legion Post.

Fred Petersen, one of twelve children of Hans Petersen and his wife, Anna Timn, was born on September 15, 1893 at Avoca. He attended the Avoca schools and graduated from the high school. Later he took a course in civil engineering at Simpson College.

At one time he was a member of the Forest Rangers in the state of Washington. He was a veteran of World War I.

He was married to Mary Nelson on January 21, 1929, and since that time with the exception of several years during the recent war when he was employed in the Martin bomber plant in Omaha, he and his wife have resided in Avoca. He was a long time employee of the Iowa Power and Light Co., in Avoca.

Mr. Petersen was always interested in doing things for the betterment of the community. He was especially fond of helping young boys and at one time served as Scoutmaster in Avoca. He was active in the affairs of the First Lutheran Church and served as president of the congregation at one time.

Survivors include his widow, a daughter, Alice; his mother, Mrs. Hans Petersen, Council Bluffs; five sisters, Mrs. Hattie Pierce, Los Angeles, CA., Mrs. Mary Woods, Stanton, NE., Mrs. Margaret Patterson, Oklahoma City, OK., Mrs. Watermann, Council Bluffs,, Mrs. Pearl Hansen, Council Bluffs, three brothers, Arthur, East Standwood, WA., Edward, Council Bluffs, Herman, Underwood. A brother, Julius and two sisters, Mrs. Anna Harris and Mrs. Della Krohn have preceded him in death.
