GABRIEL ZOBRIST

Gabriel Zobrist was born April 26, 1854, at Ruperswyl, Switzerland, and passed away at his home in Hancock, Friday afternoon, March 11 (1932), at the age of 77 years, 10 months, and 14 days.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon, March 13th, Rev. C. A. Nelson of the English Lutheran church of Avoca, officiating. Interment was in Graceland cemetery, Avoca.

Mr. Zobrist was confirmed at the age of 18 and came to America in 1876, settling at Highland, Illinois. Since 1880 he has lived in the vicinity of Hancock and Avoca. In 1894, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Hammerli, who preceded him in death in 1924. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Harry Christensen of Avoca, and Vrona Zobrist of Hancock; one son, Herman of Hancock, one brother Jacob Zobrist, of Hancock, six grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

On August 9th, 1914, he was severely injured, his spine being paralyzed which caused him to be bedfast ever since. During his years of suffering he was tenderly cared for by his dear ones and after his wife’s death, the burden fell especially upon his daughter, Vrona. Through many periods of special sickness he was nursed back to comfort and health, but his weakened body and will finally submitted to the inevitable and he slept calmly away last Friday afternoon.
