Mrs. Ellen Hauptman (1844 - circa 1925)

In the passing of Mrs. Ellen Hauptman, a devoted Christian woman went to claim the reward of a well spent life.
Her death occurred Friday evening October 23, after a lingering illness of several months.
Ellen Gorman was born in county Kilkinney, Ireland, August 1, 1844 and came to this country when she was married at Peoria, Illinois to Henry Hauptman in 1867, to this union was born four children. Mr. and Mrs. Hauptman lived in Illinois until the death of her husband, when she came to Avoca in 1878 with her four small children and settled on a farm nine miles south of Avoca, where she lived until ten years ago when she moved to Avoca.
Mrs. Hauptman was a woman of noble character, a very devoted mother and a kind and loving neighbor and friend.
She was always thoughtful of others and was ever ready to do a kind deed for a friend. Truly it can be said of her, that none knew her but to love her, and none named her but to praise.
She was a very patient sufferer and although bedfast for en weeks, was never heard to complain, but bore her suffering in resignation to the Will of God.
Mrs. Hauptman was a very devoted Catholic, a faithful member of St. Mary’s Parish and died fortified by the right of her religion.
She leaves to mourn her loss, three children: Peter, of Avoca, Mrs. Will Nilan and Mrs. Kathryn McDermott, both of Walnut. One son, Henry, having preceded her in death. She also leaves one sister, Mrs. Mary Smith of St. Peter, Minnesota, and one brother Richard Gorman of mead, Nebraska and twelve grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
The funeral was held from St. Mary’s church Monday morning at 9 where a large number gathered to pay their last respects to a neighbor and friend.
Her six grandsons acted as pall bearers, and she was laid to rest in the Avoca cemetery.
The family have the sympathy of the entire community.
