Death of Dominick Gross, Jr
(April 1, 1848 - September 7, 1923)

Dominick Gross, one of the pioneer settlers of the east end of Pottawattamie County, passed away at his home southwest of Avoca, last Thursday evening, September 27, after a short illness, aged seventy-five years, five months, and six days.
The funeral services were held Monday morning at 9:30 am, October 1, at St. Mary’s Church with Father Albers officiating at requiem high mass.
Dominick Gross was born at Alsace, Germany, on the twenty-first day of April, 1848. In 1853, at the age of five years he came to America with his parents, Dominick and Mary (Littollf) Gross, and located at Le Claire, Iowa. In 1873, Mr. Gross came to Pottawattamie county and located on a farm in section 25, Pleasant township where he made his home up to the time of his death.
In 1877, Mr. Gross was united in marriage to Miss Josephine Wiseman, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John (Barbara Gaettle) Wiseman. To this union nine children were born, five sons, George A, of Shelby, Iowa; William R; Frances D; and Clarence, all of Avoca; and Charles, deceased; and four daughters, Mrs. Mary Doll, of Walnut, Iowa; Mrs. Josephine Sarvis, Mrs. Margaret Zimmerman, and Miss Bessie, of Avoca. Besides wife and children he leaves fifteen grandchildren, two brothers, Joseph, of St. James, Minnesota; and George, of Walnut.
Mr. Gross was a very successful farmer and cattle raiser. For a number of years, Mr. Gross was a heavy producer of Hereford cattle, which brought him good returns. He was ever a kind, considerate friend and neighbor, and in his death the family has lost a good husband and father, the community a faithful citizen and neighbor.
“We shall sleep, but not forever,
There will be a glorious dawn,
We shall meet to part----No never
On the resurrection morn.”
