John Oliver MAASSEN passed away Monday, October 27, 2008 at the Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, NE having attained the age of 82 years, 7 months & 18 days.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, October 29 at the United Church of Avoca, IA with Nancy Ross-Hullinger as the clergy. Internment was held at the Graceland Cemetery in Avoca. Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca was in charge of arrangements.

Serving as casket bearers were John's grandchildren, Carl MAASSEN, Kristen MAASSEN, Cory MAASSEN, Kale MAASSEN, Angie FRINK, Erin MAASSEN, Joey MAASSEN, Emily MAASSEN, Matt MAASSEN, Eric MAASSEN and David MAASSEN.

John Oliver MAASSEN, the son of Julieus and Sena ANDERSEN MAASSEN, was born on March 9, 1926 in Avoca. He attended the local country school and graduated from Avoca High School in 1943. He then went to work for his brother, Walter, on a farm near Marne, IA. In 1950 he began to farm on his own and in 1951 he started a partnership with his brother, Curtis.

John was united in marriage to Maxine WATKINS on January 30, 1954 in Avoca. They were the parents of four sons, Dale, Paul, Gary & Alan.

In 1968 the family moved to the MAASSEN family farm south of Avoca. In 1981 John & Maxine retired from farming and moved to their home in Avoca on Frost Avenue. He was a member of the United Church of Avoca.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Maxine; his brothers and sisters, Orpha STAMP, Howard, Gerald, Walter, Ralph, Dale & Curtis.

John is survived by his sons, Dale and his wife Angie of Hancock, IA, Paul & his wife Sharon of Omaha, Gary and his wife Cathy of Chicago, IL and Alan & his wife Kimarie of Avoca; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandson; brothers and sisters, Willis MAASSEN and his wife Betty and Francis MAASSEN all of Avoca, Joan ANDERSEN of Atlantic, IA; sisters-in-law Betty MAASSEN and Jeannette MAASSEN, both of Walnut, IA; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
