Duane V. Wilson (1928-2008)

Duane Vertis Wilson, age 80, of Higley, one of the last true cowboys, went to be with the Lord on October 2, 2008.

Duane was born on January 3, 1928, in Oakland, Iowa. After graduating from Oakland High School he served as a paratrooper in the U.S. Army at the end of WWII. When his service in the Army was completed he returned to Oakland and started his own business, Wilson Truck Line. He was a farmer, cattle rancher, and avid country western dancer, moving from Iowa to Arizona in 1975.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Zoe (Williams) Wilson; and grandson, Joey Koeth.

He is survived by his sons, Michael (LeeAnn) Wilson of Mesa, Ariz., Newt Wilson of Oakland, David (Jenn) Wilson of San Marcos, Calif.; and stepson, Michael (Marsha) O'Brien of Oakland; daughters, Paige (Jamie) Minor of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Whip Wilson of Lincoln, Neb., Sherry (Jon) Spitz of Gilbert, Ariz., and Julie (Joe) Koeth of Chandler, Ariz.; 19 grandchildren; and 7 great grandchildren; brother, Gerald Wilson of Oakland; and two sisters, Jean Priegel of Orange, Calif., and Beaulavon "Tootie" McGraw of Mission Viejo, Calif.

Visitation will be held on Friday October 10, 2008, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Rieken Vieth Funeral Home, 219 Oakland Ave, Oakland, with funeral services on Saturday October 11, 2008, at 10:00 a.m., at Oakland Christian Church, Oakland, with burial at Oaklawn Cemetary. Flowers may be sent to Rieken Vieth Funeral Home. Donations may be made on his behalf to the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center, Barrow Neurological Institute, 500 W. Thomas Road, Suite 720, Phoenix, AZ 85013.
