In Memory: Ernest J. Lefeber

Memorial Mass for Ernest J. Lefeber, 67, of Harlan was held Saturday at Rosman Center of St. Michael’s Church in Harlan with the Rev. Jack McClure officiating.

Mr. Lefeber died May 21 at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan.

He was born June 16, 1934, in Portsmouth to John and Emma (Leinen) Lefeber. He moved to Harlan in 1959. He was a 1952 graduate of St. Mary’s High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1956-56. He worked at the Harlan Post Office for 26 years and was the postmaster at the Shelby Post Office for nine years, retiring in 1997. He was a member of St. Michael’s Church in Harlan.

Mr. Lefeber was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley, in 1999.

Survivors include three sons, Dennis of Omaha, Ronald and wife, Luann, and Keith and wife, Kelly, all of Harlan; two sisters, LaVonne Jensen and husband, Paul, of Council Bluffs and Margie Gordon and husband, Ray Dean, of Arion; two brothers, Russell and wife, Dorothy, of Harlan and Gene and wife, Jo Ann, of Portsmouth; five grandchildren.

Rosary was held Friday evening followed by family visitation at the church with Patrick Davitt officiating. Burial of ashes was in the Harlan Cemetery with military rites conducted by Harlan American Legion. Belford-O’Neill Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
