Harriet Maude (Peterson) Winslow died peacefully in her sleep, April 22, 2008, at Bethany Lutheran Home in Council Bluffs.

She was born December 10, 1919, in Missouri Valley, Iowa. Harriet had four sisters and one brother in her loving home. The "beautiful Peterson sisters" were renowned in Missouri Valley. The sisters had a strong family bond and frequently visited and traveled together.

After graduation from Missouri Valley High School Harriet attended business school in Council Bluffs. On November 10, 1945, she married Mervin Winslow after his service in the U. S. Army during World War II. Over the years she was employed by Carpenter Paper, Pryor-Menz Attractions, and as a secretary at the old Council Bluffs Savings Bank, retiring from the bank in 1984. Harriet and Merv built a home on Hockenberry Drive, in Council Bluffs and had a great time entertaining their friends in their huge screened in back porch and their gardens surrounded by the limestone wall which Merv spent years constructing. They were long time members of Grace Presbyterian in Council Bluffs.

For many years Harriet loved getting together with her friends in The Project Group. She and Merv had fantastic times square dancing. They attended square dancing conventions in Colorado. She had a great sense of humor and was always ready with a funny retort if challenged by a jokester. Harriet and her sister Ruth made several trips to Europe and she made beautiful albums describing the trips. Harriet and her sister Mid also took an annual trip to Atlanta, Georgia where they met up with Ruth and then journeyed to Boca Raton, Florida to enjoy the sun. After Merv's death in 1984, Harriet moved to a Bethany Lutheran apartment, she enjoyed her friends there as well as the many parties involving dressing up in creative costumes.

Harriet was preceded in death by her parents, Serenus and Nellie; brother, Arnold; sisters, Ruth, Francis and Eleanor and brother-in-law, Delmar Winslow.

She is survived by sister, Mildred Paulson of Mason City, Iowa; nieces, Joyce Price of Clear Lake, Iowa, Judy Dixon of Denver, Colo.; many grand nephews and nieces and special friends, Craig and Sandy Lovstad of Council Bluffs.

To commemorate Harriet's life and love of beautiful things memorials may be made to the Harriet Winslow Garden Fund (these will be combined with her sister Eleanor's memorial) in care of Joyce Price, 204 N. 10th St., Clear Lake, Iowa, 50428. Memorials will be used for Central Garden of Clear Lake, a newly created public garden. A private graveside service will be held.
