Mrs. Margaret Heckman, 62, widow of Barney Heckman of Neola, died of self-inflicted burns at a local hospital Thursday evening, according to a statement by family members Friday morning.

A son of Herman Heckman, of Carson said Mrs. Heckman, who had been despondent over her failing health, had poured kerosene over her clothing and had ignited it while her nurse was away from the house. She was rushed to a local hospital Thursday noon.

Mrs. Heckman had been in ill health for a year and a half, according to her son. She had been a resident of the Neola vicinity all her life, and was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Chruch.

Surviving are three sons, Adolph Thiel of Underwood and George Thiel of Route No. 3, Council Bluffs, and Herman Heckman of Carson, a sister, Mrs. Emma Altrock of Treynor, two brothers, John Schmielau of Underwood and George Schmielau of Treynor; and seven grandchildren. The body was taken to the Cutler funeral home.
