Durward M. "Dewey" Thiel, 29, 502 S. 29th St., died Sunday at a local hospital following a short illness and complications.

Born in Neola, he was a resident of Council Bluffs nearly all of his life. He was a switchman for the Illinois Central Railroad and a former merchant marine. He attended the Regorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

His survivors include: widow, June; two sons, Dennis Lee and Ronald Dean, both at home; parents, Mr. and Mrs. George J. Thiel of Carson; three brothers, Duane of Sacramento, Calif., Dwight of Limestone, Me., and Donald of Carson; and sister, Delores Thiel of Council Bluffs.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Cutler Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. John Booth, pastor of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
