In Memory: Robert D. Wunder, D. V.M.

Robert Dean Wunder, D.V.M, 76, died at his home in Harlan on Monday, May 8, 2000.

He was born on October 31, 1923, at Minden, Iowa, the son of Frank and Eola (Borland) Wunder. He was baptized at the Congregational Church in Minden and later became a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Avoca.

Robert attended country school and graduated from Minden High School.

He was inducted into the United States Army Air Force on July 15, 1943 and served as a control tower operator. He was honored with the American Theater Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged on February 28, 1946.

Robert attended Iowa State University, was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity, and earned his doctorate in veterinary medicine in 1951. He lived in Ames until graduation and then moved to Avoca.

He married Frances Langin on June 26, 1947 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Neola. Six children were born to this union.

Following the death of Dr. Leach, Robert took over his veterinary practice in Avoca. He also worked for the Iowa Department of Agriculture until his retirement in 1989. Upon retirement Robert became a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Harlan.

Robert was à. member of the Iowa and American Veterinary Medical Associations, AvoHa Community School Board, St. Mary's Parish Council, board of directors of try Citizens Bank in Avoca, and the 'Fred Funston American Legion Post No. 227 of Avoca.

Survivors include his wife Frances of Harlan; his children, Stephen Wunder and his wife Carol Foster of Kingwood, Texas; Brian Wunder and his wife Charna of Kansas City, Missouri; Mary and her husband Rodrigo Lopez of Omaha, Nebraska; Dennis Wunder and his wife Susy of Kansas City, Missouri; Ellen Wunder and her husband Kevin Garcia of The Woodlands, Texas; Mark Wunder and his wife Marilyn of Coralville; twelve grandchildren; his brother Eldon Wunder and his wife Toni of Cedar Falls; his sister Eleanor and her husband Philip Groth of Pella; other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Frank.

A wake service will be held at Pauley Funeral Home in Harlan at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday evening. Funeral service will be at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Harlan at 10:30 a.m. Thursday with the Rev. Howard Fitzgerald officiating.

Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery at Avoca.
