In Memory: Donald Schroder

Donald L. "Don" Schroder, 79, of Council Bluffs died January 25 at home.

He was born July 17, 1924, in Boomer Township to Charles C. and Grace M. (Christiansen) Schroder. He previously lived 48 years in Honey Creek, moving to Council Bluffs in 1998.

He was a 1942 graduate of Abraham Lincoln High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, 35th Infantry Division, and was awarded the Bronze Star. He was captured at Battle of the Bulge and spent 76 days as a P.O.W. of the Germans. He worked 37 years with Pottawattamie County Road Department, spending the last 18 years as a foreman for heavy equipment. He retired in 1987.

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Boomer Township, and served as member of Church Council. He was also an usher, greeter, financial secretary and financial treasurer. He was a member of American Legion Post y No. 337, Missouri Valley. He and his wife operated D & O Crafts for 12 years. He was an avid fisherman.

Mr. Schroder and his wife, Olga M. (Clausen), were married June 6,e 1945. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Dean Lee Schroder and by brother, Dean Charles Schroder, who died enroute home of wounds he received in World War II.

Survivors in addition to his wife include daughter, Jan Olsen, and husband, Jim, of Council Bluff's; son, Larry Schroder, and wife, Vicki, of Ralston, Nebraska; grandchildren: Jason Olsen, and wife, Nikki, of Omaha, Jill Speer of Council Bluffs, Jessica Nolte and husband, Brian, of LaVista, Nebraska, Joni Schroder and fiance, Nick Cox, of Ralston, Nebraska, and Jeff Schroder of Ralston, Nebraska; great-grandchildren: Anaka Speer of Council Bluffs, Madison Nolte and Joshua Donald Nolte of LaVista, Nebraska; nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held with a prayer service at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Chapel Tuesday evening. The funeral was held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Boomer Township, with the Rev. Charles Bichel officiating.

Burial was at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery with graveside military honors provided by American Legion Post No. 337 of Missouri Valley. A luncheon followed at the church.

Memorials may be offered to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Boomer Township; Bethany Lutheran Home or Visiting Nurse Association Hospice.
