In Memory: Velma A. Rath

Velma Adelaide Rath, 94, of Treynor died March 21, 2004 at Bethany Lutheran Home in Council Bluffs.

She was born on the family farm near Treynor on June 9, 1909, to William J. and Adeline (Timm) Rath.

She graduated from Treynor High School in 1926. In 1937, Velma moved with her parents to a house in Treynor. In 1977 she purchased a smaller home in Treynor and lived there until moving to Bethany Lutheran Home in 1997.

Velma was the owner and manager of the Treynor Fruit and Grocery from 1939 to 1955.

She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Treynor, a member of the Ladies Aid of that church and a charter member of Treynor Senior Citizens, organized in 1973.

Survivors include her sister, Fern Volkens, Council Bluffs Risen Son; niece, Janice Elliott and her husband Ron of Minden; nephews Arthur W. Rath and his wife Barb of Council Bluffs, Stanley Volkens and his wife Marcia of Middletown, Ohio, Darrell H. Rath and his wife Jeannette of Treynor, Wendell Volkens and his wife Jean of Council Bluffs and Jon Volkens and his wife Jean of Dyersville; grandnieces and grandnephews.

Visitation with the family was set for Wednesday from 6 to 7 p.m. at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home Chapel in Council Bluffs, with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. led by the Rev. Noel Kropp, Chaplain at Bethany Lutheran Home.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Treynor with the Rev. Arlyn C. Norris, Pastor, officiating.

Interment will be at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery at Treynor, followed by luncheon at the church.
