In Memory: Robert Janssen

Robert Rawleigh Janssen was born August 30, 1913, in Persia, Iowa to Hillert and Jane (Harms) Janssen. He grew up in the Persia area and attended the Yorkshire school. On October 13; 1934, he married Alvira Gramkow. The couple farmed in the Persia and Portsmouth areas. They retired from farming in 1970 and moved to Woodbine, Iowa in November of 1978.

Bob and Alvira loved to travel. The couple traveled to 37 states, and they wintered in Texas for 17 years. Bob enjoyed his coffee group and visiting with friends about the good old days. He was particularly good at remembering events and dates of things that happened years ago. Bob was very handy and could fix anything that was broke.

Bob died May 19, 2004, at his home in Woodbine, Iowa, at the age of 90.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Alden and John Janssen and one sister, Elizabeth Johansen.

He is survived by Alvira, his wife of nearly 70 years; two daughters, Beverly and her husband Merle Phillips of Atlantic; LaVonne and her husband Wayne Miller of Persia; son, Dr. Gary Janssen and his wife Dawn of Indianola, Iowa; six granddaughters, 10 great-grandchildren; two step grandchildren; two step-great grandchildren; sister, Alma Dau of Chadron, Nebraska; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, May 22 at 10:30 a.m. at Fouts Funeral Home in Woodbine with Clergy Elder LeRoy Cave officiating.

Burial was at the Valley View Cemetery in Persia.
