In Memory: Mary Catherine Haidusek, OSB

Sister Mary Catherine Haidusek, OSB, 70, died unexpectedly on October 11 at her home in Kansas City, Missouri.

A vigil service was held in the monastery chapel at Mount St. Scholastica in Atchison, Kansas Tuesday evening. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at the monastery on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.

She was born in Kansas City on March 31, 1933, the daughter of August and Mary Alice Murphy Haidusek.

She entered the Benedictine Sisters of Mount St. Scholastica in 1957 and received the name Sister Mary Winifred. Most of her life was spent as an elementary teacher in Iowa, in St. Joseph, Missouri and in Monroe, Louisiana.

She taught in Panama and Portsmouth in the 1960s. In Council Bluffs, she taught the upper grades at St. Albert for more than 20 years and assisted at Cutler-O'Neill Funeral Home.

Since 1999, she served as a caregiver for the elderly in Kansas City.

She is survived by the sisters of her Benedictine family and by a brother, James Haidusek of Eugene, Missouri, and a sister, Margie Steinberger of Richmond, Kansas.

Memorials may be sent to the Benedictine Sister of Mount St. Scholastica.
