In Memory: Kenneth Hawkes

Funeral for Kenneth E. Hawkes, 92, of Council Bluffs was held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Cutler Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard Russell, pastor of Mount Hope United Methodist Church, officiating.

Mr. Hawkes died April 15 at Bethany Lutheran Home.

He was born at Rubio on January 27, 1909, to Roy and Jennie (Garrett) Hawkes and graduated from North Loupe (Nebraska) High School in 1926. He graduated from Nebraska Central College in 1930 and completed graduate work at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

He and his wife consulted at Settlement Camp in Philadelphia. He was a music teacher in Monroe and St. Edward, Nebraska, and at Genoa, Nebraska for 15 years, then taught music at Thomas Jefferson High School for 17 years, retiring in 1974.

Mr. Hawkes was a member of Mount Hope United Methodist Church, served as Sunday school superintendent for five years and was choir director for five years. He was a former member of the Council Bluffs Kiwanis Club, the Barber Shop Chorus in Omaha and Farm Bureau.

Mr. Hawkes and his wife, Lois M. (Melton), were married June 19, 1931.

Survivors in addition to his wife include a son, Brian, and wife, Anne, of McClelland; a daughter, Karen Kreutzkampf and husband, Ronald, of Terril; 15 step-grandchildren, niece and nephews.

Burial was in the Hardin Township Cemetery.

Memorials may be offered to Mount Hope United Methodist Church or the American Heart Association
