Clifford S. Stille

CARSON - Clifford S. Stille, 83, of Macedonia died Jan. 2 at Bethany Lutheran Home in Council Bluffs.

He was born in Glenwood. He graduated from Glenwood High School in 1937. He previously lived in Strahan and Malvern, moving to Macedonia in 1957. He was a lifelong farmer and livestock producer.

Mr. Stille was an active member of the Macedonia Methodist Church where he served as a lay leader and trustee as well as a Sunday School teacher for 25 years, and a choir member for 40 years. He was a member of the Macedonia Volunteer Fire Department for 15 years, served on the Board of Low Rent Housing and the John Hamilton Memorial Corporation. He served two terms on the M.A.P.A. Board in Omaha and on the SCS Farm Advisory Committee for the Clarinda State Experimental Farm. He was chairman of the Macedonia Watershed and 23 years as a committee member on the District Soil Conservation Board, serving as chairman for 10 years.

On the state level, he was elected vice-chairman of the Conservation Commission and appointed by Gov. Robert Ray to the State Soil Conservation Committee where he served for 12 years, two years as chairman and two years as vice-chairman. He served as the first Rural Conservation Department chairman for an eight county area. He had many articles written about him in local, state, and national publications and received many awards during his career. In 1968, he was named by the "Wallace Farmer" magazine as a "Master Farmer of Iowa" and served as the organization's president. In 1975, he was named "Outstanding Soil Conservation Commissioner" and in 1980 was awarded the seven state "United States Environmental Award" by Gov. Ray. He was named the "Outstanding Beef Producer" in Pottawattamie County in 1985 and also served as the organization's secretary-treasurer and director.

Mr. Stille and his wife, Marjorie, were married 61 years.

Survivors in addition to his wife include two daughters, Sandra Ann Schuette and husband, Clifford, of Moorehead, Minn., and Carol Jane Carley and husband, Doug, of Oakland; six grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation with the family will be tonight from 6 to 7 at Hertz Funeral Home in Carson. The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Marlene Brown officiating. There will be a private burial.

A memorial fund has been established.
