Elizabeth H. O'Brien, age 86, of Council Bluffs, passed away January 23, 2008, at her home.

Elizabeth was born February 26, 1921, in Council Bluffs, to the late Clem and Katherine Holmgard. She graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1939 and married Robert H. O'Brien, former owner of the Daily Nonpareil, on August 5, 1943. Elizabeth was a homemaker, member of New Horizon Presbyterian Church, Service League and PEO.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert H. O'Brien in 1996; sisters, Maria Steinbaugh, Ingrid Borghoff and brother, Clem Holmgard.

Elizabeth is survived by her five daughters, Nancy Dorr and husband, James of Evanston, Ill., Judy O'Brien, Jacqueline O'Brien, Barbara Murphy, all of Council Bluffs, Kate Bruce and husband, Dr. Stephen of Ogden, Utah; 8 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren; sister, Clare Somers of Council Bluffs.

Open visitation, Sunday, 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home. Graveside service and burial, Monday, 11:00 a.m. in Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Paul Masters officiating. Family and friends are to gather at the funeral home on Monday at 10:00 a.m. for the cortege to the cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Council Bluffs Library or Southwest Iowa Educational Foundation.
