Ivan L. Berns, age 78, of Council Bluffs.

Ivan was born on May 12, 1929, in National, Iowa, to Albert and Alma (Steglich) Berns. He graduated from Monona High School in 1947. He then spent 2 years in the U.S. Army, part of the time he spent in Germany with his wife. He later was a mechanic for Walch Ford in Elkader, Iowa and for Janesville Auto Company in Independence, Mo., and Council Bluffs. When they closed he worked for Chicago Northwestern Railroad until he retired in 1987.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Marcella Hoeger and brother, Decellis Berns.

He is survived by his wife, Betty of Council Bluffs; 2 daughters, Linda Berns of Aliso Viejo, Calif., and Bonnie Berns and fiance Fletcher Sloan of Charleston, W. Va.; brother, Leander Berns of St. Petersburg, Fla.; 2 nieces, Connie Niehaus and Debra Heisler; nephew, Albert Berns.

Memorial service will be Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Our Saviors Lutheran Church with Rev. Ed Ward, officiating. There will be visitation with the family and refreshments following the service.
