Derald William “Jiggs” SCHUNING of Harlan, IA passed away Friday, 23 February 2007 at the Little Flower Nursing Home in Earling, IA. He had attained the age of 78 years and 19 days.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, 27 Feb at 2 pm at the Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca, IA with Pastor Brian Wohlhuter as the clergy. Serving as honorary casket bearers were Ron BARRIER, Charlie MALONE, Larry EHLERS, Doug LUNZE, Monte SCHECHINGER and Randy MILLER. Serving as casket bearers were Todd HANSEN, Blake COOPER, Justin MILLER, Raymond FREESE, Chad HANSEN and Lanny Newland. Interment was held in the Minden Cemetery in Minden, IA.

Derald William SCHUNING, the son of Orvel and Margaret (EHLERS) SCHUNING was born on 5 February 1929 in Minden. They lived on a farm until Derald was eight years old when they moved into Minden.

Derald was baptized and confirmed in the old Minden Congregational Church.

He attended country school and then Minden High school and graduated in 1947. . . . While in school in always walked out to his Grandfather SCHUNING’s farm to help on the weekends. . . . loved to listen to his granddaughter Jessica sing.

Derald was united in marriage to Darlene Elsie LUBBE on 5 February 1951 in the Minden Congregational Church. They started farming on Rev. John FRIEBOE’s farm west of Oakland. After that they lived in Caron, Treynor and Persia areas before moving to Harlan in 1996. To this union three children were born.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Ramona KARDELL.

He is survived by his wife, Darlene of Harlan; his children Richard SCHUNING and his wife Dyan of Neola, IA, Diane and her husband Calvin NIELSEN of Harlan, and Marilyn and her husband Pat McKEIGHAN of Council Bluffs, IA; nine grandchildren, seven great grandchildren’ one sister Sharon and her husband Virgil HOFF of Fountain, CO; a sister in law Velma LUBBE of Harland and a brother in law George KARDELL of Dallas, TX; many nephews, nieces other relatives and friends.
