Noyon Nadine Schaaf passed away Sunday, 16 December 2007 at Elm Crest Retirement Community. She was 89 years, three months and 17 days old at the time of her death.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, 20 December, 15 2:00 pm at Trinity Lutheran in Avoca, IA with Pastor Dennis Reich as the clergy. Serving as casket bearers were Brent SOLL, Nicholas SOLL, Adam CARAHER, John GILLILAND, Dean KOCK and Jerry GILLILAND. Interment was held in Graceland Cemetery in Avoca. Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca was in charge of arrangements.

Noyon Nadine Schaaf, daughter of James and Ida R. (LOY) CHANDLER was born on 29 August 1918 on the LOY family farm about two miles south of Avoca while her dad was serving in the army during WWI. After her father was discharged from the army her family moved to the CHANDLER farm two miles northeast of Hancock, IA.

She attended country school through the eighth grade and graduated from the Hancock High School where she was very active in school activities such as basketball, class plays and glee club.

She was a baptized member of the Hancock Methodist Church and was active in the young people’s organizations. . . . as a young girl was very active in 4-H.

Noyon attended Simpson College for two years were she as a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority. Following college she was employed as a secretary at the Brandes Insurance Agency in Avoca.

On 29 August 1943 she was united in marriage to Mervin SCHAAF. Two children were born to this union: Douglas and Janelle.

After their wedding, Mervin and Noyon lived on the SCHAAF family farm where they ran a hog operation until the retired in 1980. In 1994, they moved into Avoca.

Noyon was a faithful member of the Trinity Lutheran Church being very active in the women’s organizations and also served as past president. For a number of years, she was a 4-h leader and was an honorary member of the East Pottawattamie County 4-H committee. She was also a member and past matron of the Avoca Chapter of Eastern Star; was Mother Advisor of the Avoca Chapter of Rainbow for Girls; served on the Harlan [IA] Hospital Auxiliary Board and also a member of Avoca Garden Club.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her daughter Janelle GILLILAND; two brothers: Dean and Norman CHANDLER, and her sister Elaine ANDERSON.

She is survived by her husband Mervin SCHAAF of Harlan, IA; son Doug (Judy) SCHAAF of Seattle, WA; son-in-law John GILLILAND of Harlan; sister Wanda CHANDLER of Omaha, NE; two grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
