Velma A. Oakes, age 98, of Council Bluffs, went home to be with her Lord, November 17, 2007.

Velma was born October 20, 1909, in Denison, Iowa, to the late Richard T. and Janet (Munro) Laird. She was a cook at J.L. Brandeis for 20 years retiring in 1975. Velma was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Omaha.

She was preceded in death by her husband Leland F. Oakes in 1997; and son, William Schoening in 1991.

Velma is survived by her daughter, Beverly Seyler of Council Bluffs; 11 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and 6 great great grandchildren. Visitation with the Family, Tuesday, from 6-8 p.m. at the Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home. Funeral Service, Wednesday, 10:30 a.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 2418 E. St., Omaha with Pastor Alberto Silva officiating. A lunch will immediately follow the service. Interment, Wednesday, 2:30 p.m. in the Harlan, Iowa Cemetery.

Memorials to the church preferred.
