J. Wm. Brewer (1922-2007)

Rev. J. William Brewer, 85, retired Presbyterian minister, died peacefully Sept., 30, 2007.

In Feb., of 1940, Bill was taken under care of Presbytery to be prepared for ministry. He then attended Sterling College in Kansas. In Feb., of 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, but was not called to serve until he finished college. Bill graduated from Midshipman School at Columbia University and then went on for communications training at Harvard.

Bill served in WWII aboard the cruiser, U.S.S. Boise in the South Pacific. Following service in the Navy, Bill attended Pittsburgh-Xenia Theological Seminary in Pittsburgh, Pa. He began his ministry in the fall of 1949 by accepting a call from the Puckety Presbyterian Church, New Kensingston, Pa. Following that first pastorate, he served at the Creston Hills Presbyterian Church, Oklahoma City; Westminster United Presbyterian Church, Minden, Neb.; and Grace Presbyterian Church, Council Bluffs, Iowa, where he was honored with the title of Pastor Emeritus. In retirement he served the Sterling United Presbyterian Church, and the First Presbyterian and Southwest Presbyterian Churches in Wichita.

Preceded in death by his parents, Jay and Helen Brewer; brother, Bob; sister, Carol and his young beloved granddaughter, Erin Sullivan.

Survivors include wife, Jean; son, Dr. Dennis Brewer and wife, Lorraine, of Fayetteville, Ark.; daughter, Marilyn Sullivan and husband, Mike, of Northville, Mich.; sister, Joyce and husband, Bill Collins; brother-in-law, Dr. Robin Cuany; sister-in-law, Charlotte Brewer; brothers and sisters-in-law; 6 grandchildren; 2 great-grandsons; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorials are suggested to Sterling College, Sterling, Kan., or to the Covenant Presbyterian Church, Wichita, Kan. All Faiths Mortuary and Crematory.
