John F. Novak (1923-2007)

John F. Novak, age 83, of Council Bluffs, passed away October 2, 2007.

He was born October 3, 1923, in Chicago, Ill., to the late John and Mary (Bonk) Novak. John graduated from St. Francis High School, in 1941, where he participated in many sports. John served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. On October 9, 1946, John was united in marriage to Helen Gorman. John worked for Chicago Northwest Railroad, and retired as the round house supervisor. He was a member of St. Peters Church.

John was preceded in death by his brothers, Steve and Tom Novak.

Survivors include his wife, Helen, of Council Bluffs; sons, John and wife Jude, of Abita Springs, La., Tom and wife Kathy, of Honey Creek, Iowa; daughters, Linda Hybl and husband Larry, of Pineville, Mo., Mary Helmberger and husband Mark, of Omaha, Neb.; 8 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; 3 step great grandchildren; sisters, Betty Durfee, of Indianapolis, Ind., Norma McClelland, of Pottsboro, Texas, and Mary Robbins and husband, Gary, of Omaha, Neb.; stepsister, Nadine Novak of Grapevine, Texas; numerous nieces and nephews.

Wake service, Thursday, 6 p.m., followed by visitation until 8 p.m. at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial, Friday, 10 a.m., St. Peters Church. Father Chuck Kottas, Celebrant. Interment St. Joseph Cemetery. Luncheon to follow at St. Peters.
