I could only locate his exact date of death of October 12, 1879 and a news story about his accidental death.
The Register chronicles the crushing of an old man in a runaway accident. Yesterday morning between 10 and 11 o'clock, Mr. Lowman, of Camp township, was driving a load of wheat to the city. On the way he met Mr. James Boatright, an old man 65 years of age walking, and gave him a lift on his wagon. As the team was passing a point just west of the pork houses they had to pass through a drove of sheep which were being driven from the scales. In doing so one of the horses kicked at a sheep and got his legs over the traces. This frightened the animals and they started off at a high rate of speed. As they ran, the wagon swung back and forth, and at a rough place in the road, Mr. Boatright and Mr. Lowman, who was driving, were thrown out. The old gentleman fell in such a position, that the wheels of the heavily-loaded wagon passed over the left side of his chest and crushed all of the ribs on one side of the body. His body was badly mashed up, and in addition there was a deep gash In his jaw, supposed to have been inflicted with a penknife which he had open, in his hand at the time the runaway occurred. The old man was carried to a house near, and Dr. Rawson summoned who found that the ribs of the left side were all torn from the breast bone, and the man's body as soft as jelly. The old gentleman was still living last night, but there is scarcely any hope of his recovery. Mr. Lowman was somewhat bruised, but not seriously injured. The team tore along the road and came near running into several other vehicles before it was stopped. Boatright lives near Rising Sun. His relatives were sent for, but had not arrived last evening.
