Mary Ann Olsen, 89, passed away January 8, 2011 at Calvin Community in Des Moines. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, January 15, 2011 at Hamilton's Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St. in Des Moines. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
Mary Ann was born October 13, 1921 in Manly, Iowa to Orin and Mary Ann Knutson and grew up in Kensett, Iowa. She married George A. Olsen in 1942. After graduating from AIB in Des Moines, she worked briefly as a secretary. She then spent many years raising her children at home. When she returned to work, Mary Ann was a bookkeeper for Lutheran Social Services of Iowa until her retirement in 1985. Mary Ann and George were very active members of Central Lutheran Church and Capitol Hill Lutheran Church. She enjoyed playing bridge and loved attending her grandchildren's recitals, games, and concerts.
Mary Ann is survived by her daughter, Mary Ellen (Mark) Henderson; grandchildren, Joy and Isaac Olsen of Des Moines, and Eric, Mandy, and Lauren Henderson of Minneapolis, MN; brother, Orin Irwin (Aida) Knutson of Schertz, TX; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George A. Olsen; son, Marc Olsen; brother, Maurice Knutson; and sister, Beverly (Knutson) Stoops.
