Richard Cunningham, 73, passed away on Saturday, December 31st at his home in Johnston after a brave battle with cancer. The funeral will be held at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Des Moines on Wednesday, January 4th at 11:00 am.
Born in Cedar Rapids, Richard graduated from St. Patrick's High School and then married his high school sweetheart, Jane Craig. He worked for the Iowa DOT in Ames for 36 years before retiring in 1996. A graduate of Iowa State University, he took great joy in the fact that all of his children also graduated from Iowa State.
Richard was a strong family man who placed the comfort and pleasure of his wife and children above everything else. He will be missed by his wife, Jane of Johnston, his daughters Jeanne (Steve) Low of Johnston and Julie Steenhoek of Ames; his sons Craig (Tonya) of West Des Moines, John (JaiLi) of Panora and Matt (Ann) of St. Louis; his 14 grandchildren and his 6 brothers and sisters.
Visitation will be held at Westover Funeral Home in Des Moines on Tuesday, January 3rd at 5:00 pm with a Prayer Vigil following at 7:00 pm.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family in preparation for a memorial at Reiman Gardens.
