Charles "Chuck" Sterns went to be with Jesus on March 22, 2012. Born May 25, 1939 in Fort Dodge, IA to Donald and Mabel (Botkins) Sterns. Chuck graduated from Fort Dodge High School in 1957 where he was a member of the wrestling team and the Air National Guard. He was a gifted artist with a passion for aviation art and modeling. He served as art director for Nelson Advertising and as a graphic artist for Waddell Typesetting in Des Moines. He was well known and loved in the area as a member of the Hawkeye modelers and Plastic Surgeons modeling clubs and as a commissioned artist for the Iowa Air National Guard
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Sharon Murty Sterns, his brother, Robert, his sister-in-law, Beverly Sterns and nephew, Mitch Sterns.
Chuck is survived by a large and adoring family including his wife, Judy Carlson Sterns; children, Mike, Marci (Richard) Brady, Mark, Julie, Dave, Donald Pettorini and Jesse (Ali) McAbee and their families as well as grandchildren, Matthew, Kayla, Daniel (Amber), Noelle (Josh), Nathan, Hannah, Aaron, Timothy, Blaine, Aimee and Colin and great-grandchildren, Mykayla, Alexander and Sabatian; nieces, nephews and extended family.
Chuck will be remembered as a great man of faith, a great father and "grandpa", which was his favorite role in life. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Taylor House or to Redeemer Lutheran Church in Des Moines where Chuck was a devoted member for many years.
A Celebration of Chuck's life will be held at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 3615 University Avenue on Monday, March 26 at 11 a.m. with a visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m. until the service. Burial with military honors will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
