Bernice Ida Shanley, 83, died on January 22, 2012, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 27, at Windsor Heights Lutheran Church. Visitation will be held from 9:30-11 a.m. on Friday, January 27, at the church prior to the service. Burial will be at held at 2 p.m. on Friday, January 27, at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery near Van Meter, Iowa.
Bernice was born on August 29, 1928, in Wentworth, SD, to Esther (Nelson) and Soren Jensen. She married L. Tom Shanley on June 11, 1950, in Aberdeen, South Dakota. Bernice was a volunteer at the Blood Center and American Red Cross. She was a member of the Kiwanis Ladies Club, Good Idea Clive Women's Club, and Windsor Heights Lutheran Church.
Bernice will be missed by her husband of 61 years, L. Tom Shanley of Clive, IA; daughter, Diane (Larry) Tabak of Madison, WI; four grandchildren, Joshua Tabak of San Francisco, CA, Zachary Tabak of Madison, WI, Crystal (Sean) Carmody of Castle Rock, CO, and Kyle Shanley of Englewood, CO; two great-grandchildren, Conor and Lily Carmody of Castle Rock, CO; three sisters, Verina (Martin) Nelson of Albert Lea, MN, Janelle Carlson of Rapid City, SD, and Belva Martin of Norfolk, NE; sisters-in-law, Lerna (Clifford) Keddie of Sacramento, CA and Mae (Harold) Grandy of Yuma, AZ; brother-in-law, Lawrence (Jerri) Shanley of Aberdeen, SD; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Soren and Esther Jensen; son, Michael Shanley; sister, Verla Husman; and three brothers, Arnold, Vermon, and Raymond Jensen.
