Alvin Leiting, 85, passed away Friday, March 9, 2012 at Mercy Hospice. A funeral mass will be held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with burial at Resthaven Cemetery.
Alvin was born in Arcadia, Iowa the son of Ben and Carolyn Leiting and had lived in West Des Moines since 1969. He served in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1952 and graduated from Iowa State University in 1957. He worked as a civil engineer with the U.S. Government retiring in 1988. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Knights of Columbus, volunteered at Living History Farms, and was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and Iowa State Cyclones.
Alvin is survived by his son, Christopher of West Des Moines; step-son, Thomas (Kathy) Haley of West Des Moines; step-daughter, Rebecca Haley of Des Moines; grandsons, Tanner Leiting and Patrick Haley; granddaughters, Erin Haley and Isabelle Leiting; four brothers, Harold, Dennis, Vincent and Ron; and one sister, Bernice Williams. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara and four siblings.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at McLaren's Chapel with a vigil service at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be given to Living History Farms.
