Jerald Edward Hickey, age 81, of West Des Moines died Monday, June 18th at the Kavanagh Hospice House on 56th Street in Des Moines.

Jerry was born January 5, 1931 in Edina, Missouri to Henry and Kathryn (Hart) Hickey.

Jerry graduated from St. Joseph High School in Mason City, Iowa. He attended Loras College in Dubuque, and received a Bachelor's Degree in World History with a minor in English at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. He received his Master of Arts Degree in Social Studies at North East Missouri State Teacher's College (now Truman University) at Kirksville, Missouri. Jerry taught one year at Rudd, Iowa and 32 years at Lincoln High School in Des Moines.

Jerry joined the United States Army in 1951 and served his country during the Korean War.

Jerry was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus.

Time was enjoyed by Jerry with his grandchildren, reading, raising and showing dogs, traveling, and playing bridge and other card games.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Ellen, his son, Patrick (Catherine) Hickey of Norwalk, Iowa, and his daughter, Sheila (Randy) Studer of Naples, Florida, six grandchildren: Haley Hickey, J. Pat Studer, Sean Hickey, Aidan Hickey, Gabriel Hickey, and Sierra Studer, and a sister, Mary Hamann of Quincy, Illinois.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings: Bernice McCaughy, Sylvester Hickey, Henry Hickey, and Jim Hickey.

Visitation will be at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Parish Center at 1627 Grand Avenue on June 20th from 5 to 7 p.m. with Rosary to follow. Funeral Mass will be held on June 21st at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment will be at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.

Memorial contributions may be made to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Sacred Heart Catholic Church or Knights of Columbus Council #9632.
