Darrel William Wiener, 86, passed away peacefully at his home on June 12, 2022.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 15, 2022 at Memorial Services of Iowa (4208 N. Ankeny Blvd). A memorial service will be held at 5:30 p.m. following visitation at the funeral home. Darrel’s final resting place will be at Ankeny Memorial Gardens. Darrel was born in Cylinder, Iowa on October 2, 1935, to Orville and Vivian Wiener. He grew up on his family farm with eight brothers and sisters and loved to help his dad work on the farm. Darrel graduated high school from Iowa School for the Deaf in Council Bluffs, Iowa. In high school, he was active in multiple sports and organizations, was captain of their football, basketball and track teams, and class president his senior year.

After high school, he married his high school sweetheart, Marlene (Booy) Wiener, to whom he was married for 64 wonderful years doing everything together. They moved to Spencer, Iowa where he worked for the Spencer newspaper, and later moved to Ankeny, Iowa and worked at the Des Moines Register as print foreman for 40 years. After retirement they moved to Surprise, Arizona to enjoy golfing, sun, and friendships; and eventually made their way back to Ankeny. He loved to talk about past vacations the family took and his favorite destination was to his parents’ lake house in Minnesota (Lake Mary) where he spent so may wonderful times fishing with his dad. He loved to golf and had a passion for watching movies and sporting events on TV. He and his wife were avid followers of Ankeny High School sporting events and were awarded “Best Fans” in 2018.

He was an active member of Calvary Deaf Lutheran Church, and very involved with designing and building the church in Des Moines. One of his most proud accomplishments, was his design and publishing of the Iowa Association of the Deaf “Seal” which is still actively used today.

Darrel is survived by his wife, Marlene; daughters, Debbie (Denny) Pauscher of Ankeny, IA, and Denise (Billye) Hlozek of Longview, TX; son, David (Sara) Wiener of Ankeny, IA; grandchildren, Doug (Jessi), Dawn (Steve), Curt, Megan (Jake), Amanda (Adam), Kyle, Julia (Jordan), and Cael; great-grandchildren, Ryker, Mallory, Cole, Gage, Carrigan, Chloe, Cailyn, Jackson, and Brooks; and his siblings, Gary, Karen, Kay, and Kevin. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Dale, Ivan, Kent, and Connie; and grandson, Brad.

Memorials may be directed to the family in memory of Darrel.
