Richard “Dick” Wayne Curry, of Runnells, died Friday, July 1, 2022 at Taylor House Hospice, surrounded by his family. Dick was born in Adelphi, Iowa July 8, 1939, to Colonel and Hazel (Rosborough) Curry. He graduated from Runnells High School in 1958. He was baptized at Rising Sun Church of Christ and attended NewLife Church.
Dick married Donna Kooker on August 20, 1960. In December 1962, Dick was drafted into the US Army, serving in Germany as a cook for two years. Donna joined Dick for the last year of his deployment; they traveled through Austria, Switzerland, Italy, and France during that time. Upon returning stateside, he served in the Army Reserves through December 1968.
The couple were married for 61 years and raised two children on their farm in rural Runnells. Dick and his father-in-law built the couple’s home from start to finish. Dick always enjoyed farming, collecting and restoring antique tractors and gas engines. His career included working at Pittsburgh Plate Glass, Polk County road maintenance, Beckman Brothers Plumbing, Living History Farms, and lastly, retired from the Iowa State Fair after 20 years. Dick was a member of the Central Hawkeye Gas Engine & Tractor Club and served as President for a time.
Dick enjoyed time with family, tractor rides, mowing his lawn, gardening, being outdoors and in his retirement years wintering in Arizona. He participated in numerous tractor rides with his son, brothers, nephews and grandsons.
Dick is survived by his wife, Donna; son, Brent (Nancy) Curry; daughter, Coni (Bernie) Darr. Four grandchildren: Jessica (Chris) Jessen, Tyler (Ali) Curry, Erin (Evan) Gauer, and Alden Darr. Four great grandchildren: Kaylee, Benjamin, Weston, and Carson. He is survived by his siblings, Cliff (Rosalie) Curry, Ralph (Arlys) Curry, Jeanette (Melvin) Ward, and Pete (Julie) Curry.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Colonel and Hazel and his sister, Deloris Astley, brother-in-law, Robert Astley, and in-laws Halford and Mamie Kooker.
His visitation will be held at NewLife Church in Pleasant Hill, Iowa on July 7, 2022 at 9:00 AM and a funeral service at 10:30 AM. Burial will follow the service at Lowman Cemetery, Runnells, Iowa.
