Devoted husband, father, and brother

Richard Roy Schmitz, 84, died at his Waukee home with his family by his side on April 22, 2022. Dick was born on February 13, 1938, in Waterloo, Iowa, to John and Nell Schmitz. Dick married Melva Buttgen on August 12, 1961. They were blessed with four children. Dick loved woodworking, gardening, fishing, hunting and watching all of his children and grandchildren in their various activities. Dick worked at Kent Feeds in Waterloo and Altoona for his entire career where he worked alongside many people he counted as good friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, John, mother, Nell, two brothers, Ronnie and Delbert and sister, Rozella.

He is survived by his wife, Melva, and all four children, Kelly/Brian Glassmaker, Sue Barnes, Mike/Amy and John/Erica, as well as brothers, Dan/Pam, Larry/Kris, Joe, and sister Marilyn/Dan Dunkelberger, sister-in-law, Linda, and brother-in-law, Mike Close. He was blessed with many nieces and nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Charitable donations can be made to St. Croix Hospice of Iowa in Dick’s name. Celebration of Life to be held at a later date.
