Merle Donald Cooper, 90, passed away at Mercy Hospice House in Johnston on December 13, 2011. A Memorial Service will be held Friday, December 16 at 11:00 a.m. at the Saylorville Baptist Church, 6429 NW 6th Drive in Des Moines. Family will greet friends and relatives one hour before the service.

Merle was born in Seneca, Iowa on August 20, 1921 to Clyde and Cora Cooper. After graduating from high school he joined the Navy and served for 4 years as an Aviation Ordnanceman First Class during World War II. Following his time in the Navy, he worked for 26 years for the Postal Service, retiring in 1978. He loved farming and did so along side his friend, Ken Carlson, for many years.

Those left to remember Merle are his five children: Ronald (Evelyn) Cooper, Joel (Jeni) Cooper, Brian (Cathy) Cooper, Perry Cooper, and Valerie (Kermit) McElvain; 17 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothy; one grandchild; one great-grandson; his parents; one brother; and four sisters.
