Des MoinesJeanne B. Poorbaugh, 91, passed away Sunday, January 1, 2012, at Valley View Village in Des Moines, Iowa. Jeanne’s wishes were to be cremated, and the family will have a private memorial service in the spring.
Jeanne Barker Poorbaugh was born April 16, 1920, to Arthur and Edna (Barker) Poorbaugh. She graduated from Mingo High School in 1938, and then taught country school for four years. On December 14, 1944, Jeanne joined the U.S. Navy Waves, and was stationed in Washington, D.C., until the conclusion of WWII. With her sister, Gladys, Jeanne stood at Salute in the Bell Tower of Independence Hall In Philadelphia on April 16, 1945, while the bell was tolled 63 times, to honor the years President Roosevelt had lived.
She worked for the Federal Government as a secretary for over 25 years before retirement. Jeanne was united in marriage to Earl Bonar in 1980. The couple spent their retirement years traveling and spending winters in Texas.
She leaves behind one sister, Doris Byal of Baxter; and many nieces and nephews. Those who preceded her were her parents; husband, Earl Bonar; sisters, Ethel Eatwell and Gladys Meeker.
