Sharon Lee Barnes, 71, passed away at her home surrounded by her family on Tuesday, February 7, 2012.

Sharon was born October 15, 1940 in Des Moines to Robert and Mildred (Green) Sommars. She retired from Polk County in 1999 where she had worked as a correctional officer for many years. Sharon's passion for life showed in her fight during her battle with cancer and COPD. Sharon so loved to be with her family and friends. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and had a special knack for making crafts.

Sharon is survived by her four children Rhonda Banks (Mike), Roland Brees (Donna), Louava Crickett Deal (Chris Wright), Shannon Barnes (Laurie), her 12 grandchildren and 6 great grand children with 2 more great grand children on the way. She is also survived by her brothers, Bob Sommars, Jeri Sommars and Tim Sommars and her sister Shelly Clark as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother Mildred Kelber, her father Robert Sommars, her brother Ted Sommars and her husbands Oliver Brees, Jr. and Richard Barnes and her granddaughter Paige Barnes.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, February 13, 2012 at Hamilton's Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St. with burial to follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
